Colts sign DT Corey Simon

Rumors are the Colts have signed Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle Corey Simon. If this is true, this is great news. I’ve been saying that the biggest difference between Dungy’s Tampa defenses and the one in Indy now is a big presence in the middle of the defensive line. They have fast, agressive linebackers and secondary. They have fast, penetrating defensive ends. But they don’t have a big, dominating DT. With Simon they’d have one. SWEET!

Update: It’s true!

New Orleans Army Corps of Engineers funding was cut

Not to politicize a tragedy but…..
From June, 2005.

In fiscal year 2006, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding.

It would be the largest single-year funding loss ever for the New Orleans district, Corps officials said.

I’ve been here over 30 years and I’ve never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district.

All while Bush is cutting taxes for the rich.

I’m curious what other cuts were made by this administration in that area before now, and what kind of special projects that might have shored up the levees were denied.

sickly

I’ve been sick as a dog for a couple days. Lost my voice last night. And I’m alternating being starving hungry and “the thought of food will make me violently ill.” Good times.

giggling jackass

aren’t there more important things for the President to be doing, considering the mind numbing catastrophe in the wake of the hurricane, than giggling like a jackass while playing a guitar?

The Red Cross needs all the help it can get. A diary on DailyKos has a list of other organiztions that could use the help as well.

Katrina

My thoguths and positive vibes go out to everyone in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area that will be affected by Hurricaine Katrina. I linked to an article about this danger facing New Orleans about a year ago. I can only hope the worst case doesn’t happen.

Won on a Safety

Okay, so I’m normally not the type to write about high school football. But I was browsing the newspaper from where I grew up and found out that my alma mater, Tri-Central High School, won a football game last night, with 10.3 seconds left in the game, with a safety. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard of a game being wona t the last minute on a 2 point safety. Even better it was against a pretty strong rival and the school closest geographically to TC. Way cool.

Cool

Earth’s Core Spinning Faster Than Crust

heh

How many Bush Administration officials does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None.

Nothing is wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day.

Any reports of its lack of incandescence are a delusional spin from the liberal media.

That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effect.

Energy Independance via…Montana?

Wow. All I can say is wow. If this is possible… it could really change things. And from a populist Democratic Governor in a Red mountain state with balls. I like. via Kos. (and yes, I’m stealign the same excerpt that Kos uses)

Montana’s governor wants to solve America’s rising energy costs using a technology discovered in Germany 80 years ago that converts coal into gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel.

The Fischer-Tropsch technology, discovered by German researchers in 1923 and later used by the Nazis to convert coal into wartime fuels, was not economical as long as oil cost less than $30 a barrel.

But with U.S. crude oil now hitting more than double that price, Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s plan is getting more attention across the country and some analysts are taking him very seriously.

Montana is “sitting on more energy than they have in the Middle East,” Schweitzer told Reuters in an interview this week.

“I am leading this country in this desire and demand to convert coal into gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel. We can do it in Montana for $1 per gallon,” he said.

“We can do it cheaper than importing oil from the sheiks, dictators, rats and crooks that we’re bringing it from right now.”

The governor estimated the cost of producing a barrel of oil through the Fischer-Tropsch method at $32, and said that with its 120 billion tons of coal — a little less than a third of the U.S total — Montana could supply the entire United States with its aviation, gas and diesel fuel for 40 years without creating environmental damage.

An entry level Fischer-Tropsch plant producing 22,000 barrels a day would cost about $1.5 billion, he said.

This could also help parts of the more rural, economically depressed southern Indiana that has coal deposits as well. And does it really burn cleaner than our current oil, gas and aviation fuel?

This just reenforces my view that for the Democratic Party to make a resurgence we need to model ourselves after the fighitng populist Democrats out west that are starting to have victories like those in Montana.

Update: Yes I know it can’t all be happy bunnies and ponies. And that the more..ahem.. ideologically pure members of the Democratic Party are calling for an end to all carbon based energy. But relaly, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. So we need to look for reasonable transitional energy. This would be a great way to wean us off of crude from the Middle East (think national security) as well as getting people thinking about alternative energy methods beyond just pipe dream hydrogen (which is still a ways down the pike from becoming large-scale feasible). But this is comign from a Democrat that likes nuclear power so I’m sure I’ll get flamed either way.

A Few Things

Lordy this day is dragging. Trying to fight a test machine and convince it to stop being a bastard is making the day quite slow.

Remember Drinking Liberally: Indianapolis is tongiht. WOuld love to maybe see some of my Indy readers there.

In case you’ve fallen behind on RoveGate, the LA Times has a good summary.

Wait… so Time knew about the Rove stuff before the election but didn’t say anything because they didn’t want to affect it? Whaaaaaaa? Isn’t that the point of journalism - to unconver the uncomfortable truths and speak truth to power. Isn’t the POINT to affect things when things are bad and you have proof of it? Jeebus.

Oh God.. please please please tell me this is a joke. Satire. Something. There’s no way this can be real.

The General is right.. there’s a severe lack of songs about panzers these days. We definitely need more College Republicans singing Nazi anti-Communist songs.

Fox News can bite me. This just goes lower than I thought even they were capable of.
