SOTUS recap
I’ll keep this short, but first thanks to CJ, Shawn, Noah and Cheryl for stopping by last night and checking out the new DL location we’ll start using next week.
So a few moments that sorta cracked me up/gave me an aneurism during the SOTUS:
- Someday, a President will stand up and say “The state of the union is horseshit. I’m outta here bitches!”
- Freedom! 9/11! Terror! Freedom! Freedom! Terror! Freedom!
- “Hindsight isn’t wisdom” and “second guessing isn’t strategy”? Ahhhhh yes. The old “you can’t criticize me no matter how stupid my decisions have been” card. Nothing like being told the President is above criticism.
- Human-animal hybrids? What the FUCK? As CJ said, someone watched The Island of Dr. Moreau last night and got scared.
- Love the lies about his domestic spying program. Other presidents stayed within the law. You broke it, Bushie.
- I LOVED when Democrats stood and applauded when Bush mentioned his failed Social Security boondoggle last year. Who was the ad wizard that came up with that one?
- God what a boring SOTU. Could it be any more bland?
- So we spent $10 billion over 5 years on alternative energy research. It sounds like a big number but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what we should be spending and how much we’ve spent on this bogus war. This is going to be one of those programs that sounds great but will get underfunded and swept under the rug. Nto to mention how much of it he’s wanted to cut or underfund in the past.
- He actually brought up No Child Left Behind in a good context? What an idiot. It’s been roundly derided by politicians of all stripes and hated at the state level.
- The irony of the anti-science Bush Administration trumpeting science education is … well.. near sickening.
- I never heard the word ‘Katrina’ or really anything about disaster relief durign teh whole speech. I wonder why….
- Same for Medicare Part D. Why ever didn’t he mention THAT?
- Bush talking about our dependance on foreign oil is like a drug dealer saying we have a drug problem in this country.
- Health Savings Accounts are a joke. They’re only good for people who can already afford to save more money. For the poor who have bad health care, they can’t afford to put away extra money, pre-tax or not. It does NOTHING to address the health care problem in this country, and has lots of problems.
- TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH DO NOT SPUR THE ECONOMY! jeebus!
- The studio woman for ABC who came on after the speech and said it was “remarkable how angry the Democrats were” really cracked me up. Yes, it’s remarkabale! How dare they question Dear Leader? Don’t they know presidentin’ is hard work?
- Tim Kaine did pretty well delivering the Democratic response, but I wish they had put some big ambitious policy proposals in the response. Maybe a single-payer health care plan or something. Until the Democrats start putting some big ideas up against the GOP’s failed ideas, we’ll continue to be the party of complaining without ideas. Now political junkies like myself and other core Democrats know we have ideas - but if we don’t get them out there and take some chances with some big ideas, John Q. Voter won’t know it.
Think Progress has some great SOTU roundup entries on their blog.

Hmm, makes you wonder more about the decision to get Alito on the SC.
