Okay, busy busy day today but did find some interestign links to share with everyone.
Glenn Greenwald’s post on the Specter bill riminds me why we need to call our Senators:
What Specter’s Op-Ed actually does is provide a powerful reflection of the extent to which the Congress has been reduced to an empty, symbolic vessel which is permitted to act only to the extent it retroactively endorses the President’s conduct. The outright debasement of the Congress by the administration is additionally reflected by the fact that Specter is actually expressing gratitude for the President’s willingness to allow courts to adjudicate the constitutionality of his conduct, as though that is something the President has the power to prohibit.
Long Live Afghanistan’s new government! Same as the old (Taliban) government!
AFGHANISTAN’S notorious Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which was set up by the Taliban to enforce bans on women doing anything from working to wearing nail varnish or laughing out loud, is to be re-created by the government in Kabul.
…
“In my opinion what we have in power under the mask of democracy are the brothers of Taliban–fundamentalists, warlords and drug lords,” she added. “Our country is under the shadow of their black hands. They are against women and re-creating the [department] is proof of this.”
Interesting post over at Angry Bear about just how profits on the privatized Chicago Skyway toll road have went up. Is the same to come on the Indiana Toll Road (I believe both are operated by the same company)
In other words, profits are up for two reasons: (a) the owners are extracting consumer surplus from motorists; and (b) labor costs are down not because the owners have economized on the number of workers but because they have lowered their pay. Not exactly the typical definition of efficiency.
The White House changed NASA’s mission statement. How? They removed “to understand and protect our home planet.”

In 2004, for example, the U.S. government’s Energy Information Administration analyzed a carbon-cutting plan advanced by Sens. John McCain and Joe Lieberman, which aimed to stabilize greenhouse emissions. The energy administration estimated that reaching this target would cause U.S. GDP to be 0.4 percent less than it would otherwise have been in 2028. Since GDP was projected to grow by 90 percent between the time of the study and that year, this meant that the nation could address climate change and still experience growth of 89.6 percent over the period.
Michael Savage is batshit fucking crazy.
