Fuck Yeah!

The Disgruntled Chemist has two great posts in a row. First, a review of the America of 2006 in America - fuck yeah!. Also, something that I think needs to be repeated over and over - John McCain IS NOT A MAVERICK.

John McCain is full of shit, and everybody should realize it. They won’t, because the media is massaging his dick with the back of its throat, but they should.

Indeed. Anyone who still believes that John McCain is this straight talkin’ rebel maverick of the GOP is either not paying attention or being willfully ignorant. Sadly, there are a good number of the latter.

Drinking Liberally Tonight

Remember tonight is Drinking Liberally: Indianapolis!

7pm-whenever
Spencer’s Stadium Tavern
802 S. West St. (SW Corner of West & McCarty)

Look for the tall redhead with a beard and glasses. C’est moi.

There’s a Baron Hill fundraiser going on at the same location just before, so if you get ther e alittle early you might just get to meet him. No promises.

$3300 A Second

$3,300 every second.

That’s how much the war in Iraq is currently costing taxpayers.

I thought the invasion would finance itself! I thought that all those cost projections were too high. WHERE ARE MY PARADES AND ROSE PETALS, DAMNIT?!

But more than the cost, we’ve lost thousands of American soldiers on this fool’s errand.

How much is too much? What will it take for people to finally get pissed about this and kick these dumb fuckers out who got us into this mess?

By the time you finish reading this, the war will have cost us nearly another $50,000…

In Which Jason Tries To Stay Pessimistic

The polls from the big three competitive House races in Indiana are encouraging. Donnelly is leading in IN-02, Ellsworth is leading in IN-08 and Hill is leading in IN-09.

I’m trying hard to stay pessimistic about the election. The Democratic campaign strategy for 2006 seems to be doing the trick.

StampedeBlue.com PPYA NFL Power Rankings

So I decided to take what I did before the playoffs a couple seasons ago and what I attemtped to start doing last year and do it for real this season. I wrote a little PHP utility to scrape through nfl.com’s stats page and calculate Offensive, Defensive and Aggregate rankings for NFL teams based on a Points Per Yard model.

I’ll be writing these exclusively on StampedeBlue.com but I will try to remember to link to them from here.

  1. PPYA Intro
  2. Week 1 Power Rankings
  3. Week 2 Power Rankings
  4. Week 3 Power Rankings

Also, BigBlueShoe (the man behind Stampede Blue) wrote a more detailed analysis of the top 10 in my rankings as well as some notable absentees from the top 10.

You mean there’s NOT a face on Mars?

Alas, all those people who think there is a face on Mars at Cydonia need to pull more pseudo-science ouf of their ass, as it’s just a particularly striking, although natural, mesa formation.

GUIdebook

The GUIdebook is a pretty cool listing of various Operating SYstem GUIs, complete with screenshots. I have used 10 of the listed Desktop GUIs. Can you guess which ones?

Going to the Colts Game

I decided to spring for a ticket to the Colts game this weekend against Jacksonville. The Colts released soem single seat tickets and I sprung for some $49 upper deck tickets. Is it just me or are ticket prices much higher this year? A coupel eyars ago I got ~$49 playoff tickets in th4 lower bowl. Now $49 gets you row 20 in the upper deck.

I shouldn’t be spending the $$$,  but it should be a hell of a game. I suppose I’ll panic about the money later.

Why My Site Has Been Slow Lately. Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love My Web Host

Some of you may have noticed that the website has been sorta slow the last several weeks. There’s a reason for that. My host, Dreamhost, was having all sorts of issues from power outages to hardware funk.

Well, they’re still cool with me. They explain all what’s going on right on their blog and what they’re goign to do to fix it. Their latest post, Anatomy of a Disaster, Part 2, is an excellent overview of not just the problem, but how
rapidly expanding demand can quickly overtake what was once thought ot be well laid plans. You know it’s bad when it takes 7 Cisco engineers to hunt it down.

Dreamhost still rocks, IMO, and I highly recommend them.

Congressional Staff Salaries

CJ sent me the link to the amazingly cool LegiStorm index of Congressional Staff Salaries. It’s a fount of material.

Like why is there a House Prayer Room Coordinator that makes the equivalent of $64,000 a year?

Why does the House Chaplain make the equivalent of nearly $162,000 a year?!!! (which just happens to be a bit less than the House Attending Physician - hmmmm there’s a joke somewhere in there about the GOP’s views of religion vs. science….)

Why does the Senate Shoe Shine Attendant make more than all of the women who work in the House Child Care Center. And don’t even compare them to Senate’s Chief Barber/Stylist who makes $67k a year.

I tell you, the jokes are writing themselves. Have fun digging through it yourself.

Thanks to CJ for the link and the IM inspired digging.
