Great Book. Though I wasn't too sure about why the father and son decided not to hold up longer in safety and comfort of the bomb shelter -- I guess they were trying to get south before winter. Also, you would think the son would have already run across the relics of a "Coke" machine earlier in his life. I hope this movie does well. It's a little depressing for a release at the start of the holiday season, but maybe people will flock to see it because the movie will make them realize things could be a lot worse.

Apparently this post ended up high on some search terms for this. Strange how that happens sometimes.

As for the book not having any specifics abotu WHAT caused the apocalypse, I liked it that way. Leaves more to the imagination, and to the survivors it doesn't much matter what caused it but that they need to survive. This seemed just logn enough after that people are done thinking about it and now just thinking about survival. That's how I read it to be, anyway.

THE ROAD reminded me a lot of A CANTICLE OF LEIBOWITZ, in its setting and mood (though it has a happier ending than CANTICLE). It's hard to do anything new with the post-apocalyptic genre, but the book manages to paint a gritty portrait of life in the days after the Fall; most post-apoc books haven't done that; but I would have liked some more details about the cataclysm that destroyed civilization--even if just a line about the exact cause.

I too could not put this book down. I always pictured Ian Holm as the father but I guess he's too old for the role. Viggo Mortensen is a very fine actor too. Really looking forward to the movie. I was very sorry when I reached the end of the book.

I can hardly wait for this movie. The book was riviting. I couldn't put it down til I had read the last word, then I went back and reread it. It is so well written and so believable to me. I am a fan. In reading the book, I thought the boy was younger but I guess that in these circumstances 11 is pretty young. I hope they do a good job as it will be a film that stays with you for a long time if it is done right. Do bring it on. Just don't do the kind of job they did with the Postman, another of my favorite books.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Very sad. It could make a great film. I would think Clive Owen might make a better lead, but Viggo should do well.
